Bars, Woman in a Cage Inspiration

bars inspiration guitar

Occasionally someone will ask me where I got the inspiration for a story.

I  intend to write a longer post about the process. Various things are involved. But for now I thought I would tell you about my main inspiration for the series I am currently writing called Bars, Woman in a Cage.

You can catch up with part one and part two. Part three will be here soon I expect.

Woman in a Cage Main Inspiration

Perfect for the Wicked Wednesday prompt ~ Another Song.

The reason I wanted to write a story about  a caged woman was because I have a weird and wonderful brother in law. I wrote a little about him here – or rather mentioned he used to have his own dungeon.

Both he and my man are very creative musically and have been in bands together in yester-year. And my brother in law writes the kind of songs that I love but are just that little bit out there – so never destined to be well known.

Anyhow, a few years ago I went to see him play in Glasgow and he sung this song of his. As soon as I heard it I knew it had to be a story.

Woman in a Cage – written and sung(live) by my man’s brother…

In my back room below the stairs

Where no one goes and no one cares

I share my pain, I vent my rage

And when I sleep I keep my woman in a cage.

In my back room

I get dressed up like Doris Day

And when it’s time

I climb aboard the Deadwood stage(whip crack-away)

I keep my woman in a cage

In my back room

My woman in a cage

You’ll never see a menage like this

on a problem page

It’s just a fantasy

My real life agony Aunt might beg to disagree

Except of course she can’t…

In my back room I make the rules

I make her scream

Until she drools

We’re not in love

She’s on a wage

(I’m twice her size

She’s half my age)

It works for her

It works for me

I keep my woman in a cage

In my back room…

  1. oh I love knowing these details of your process for this story …. I’m so often percolating with various bits of inspiration, too.

  2. That’s a great song! Very catchy and great lyrics. And I found myself thinking about scenes from “Bars” while I was listening. Fascinating to get this glimpse into your inspiration ??

  3. This was fascinating May – I love to lift the lid on what makes a blogger tick and you’ve shared a lot here.

I cant wait to grab my headphones and listen to that song, the lyrics are so cool and quirky in a slightly impressionist way.
Brilliant (and so nice that you have such a great relationship with him).

  4. A very nice song, and it’s nice to hear where you’re getting your inspiration 🙂

  5. There’s a definite story in that song to make a kinkster perk up and listen. x

  6. This has to be one of my favourite posts, simply because it all came together so perfectly. The song, the writing and then the prompt. Brilliant May. And the brother in law sounds pretty cool too ?

    1. He’s a bit of a bad man Missy – but in a good way – he is one of my best friends and one of the few people in my real world who know about my blog. Personally I couldn’t believe my luck when I saw the WW prompt – cause I was going to include this song at some point x

  7. Great song, I wonder if everyone listening knows what’s really going on in the song.

Love it when you talk to me
