Sex Addiction ~ Fact or Fiction

I had only a vague notion about sex addiction when this guest post landed in my inbox. Immediately the content fascinated me.

It appears sexual addiction exists but the evidence for such a disorder is not empirical being absent from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

Those with a sex addiction lack control, which has long-term harmful consequences in various ways.

This article provides a lot of documentation for you to examine. And I would also like to add this article for your perusal.

Sex Addiction – Guest Article

Sex is a normal and pleasurable part of life and relationships. So, how can this act of passion be an addiction?

When something isn’t properly understood, it is shrouded in misconceptions by popular culture. To combat the misconception about sex addiction, it’s important to talk about what it is and what it is not.

Am I a Sex Addict?

Compulsive sexual behavior (called sexual addiction) is a psychological condition in which a person feels unable to control their sexual urges. It can manifest itself in many ways, so you’ll need to look for several possible warning signs that you or your partner has a sex addiction, including:

Exploiting Others for Sex

You’re generally a good person who treats others with kindness and respect. You even hire escort services with no issues.

When it comes to sex, however, you tend to be careless about people. You see them as objects to satisfy your desires, and don’t care about their feelings. You will do anything to get them to give in to your demands or fantasies.

Sex Dominates Your Thoughts

You normally find it difficult to focus on something for more than ten minutes without your mind shifting to sexual thoughts. And start fantasizing about your main source of pleasure–sex.

Masturbating Often

Whether it’s in the morning, during your lunch break, or before you go to bed, you find yourself masturbating continually. You may even masturbate immediately after sex.

If you find yourself masturbating more than twenty times per week, then you may be struggling with sexual addiction. In extreme cases, you may end up engaging in criminal activities, such as stalking, if you don’t curb the habit.

Is Porn Addiction the Same as Sexual Addiction?

No. Sex addiction and porn addiction are different disorders. Porn addiction is essentially a type of sex addiction that usually manifests itself differently than other forms of sex addiction.

What’s The Mental Impact of Sex Addiction?

If you’re a sex addict, you may not get pleasure from the act. Instead, you’ll  feel guilty, empty, or used. You might feel the urge to repeat the acts in hope of attaining the ‘right’ thrill the second time.

Doing things that you rarely enjoy but can’t stop will only make you feel awful. According to experts, clinical signs of sexual addiction include pain, anxiety, depression, and alcohol abuse.

How To Treat Sex Addiction

An experienced medical professional, such as a psychiatrist, sex therapist, or psychologist, can treat sex addiction.  Treatments vary depending on the underlying cause. If your sex addiction is a result of a mood disorder or anxiety disorder, for example, your doctor may prescribe medications as part of the therapy.

If you suspect you are addicted to sex, you should first see your family doctor or local psychiatric association. Either of these professionals can refer you to the right specialist.

There’s also an increasing number of sexual addiction groups available, which offer emotional support and helpful solutions.

  1. It’s so good to have a post like this up. I don’t know a whole lot about sex addiction though I knew it existed and this is helpful to learn a bit about it.

  2. Interesting post May. I agree, in our youths, that 20 times a week could have been maxed out!

  3. Well I don’t think I’ve ever been guilty of sexual addiction though I’m certain I masturbated more than 20 times a week when I was younger. But I would never mistreat others for my personal pleasure.
