Think telephone Sex is a thing of the past? Think again…

Phone Sex Past and Present ~ Guest Post

Phone sex has changed drastically since its humble beginnings a few decades ago. The development of new technology has not rendered phone sex obsolete but instead made it more personal, customizable, and convenient than ever.

The Invention of Telephone Sex

It’s relatively well-known that whenever some new technology is pioneered, the very next step is figuring out how people can use it for sexual purposes. Telephones were invented in the late 1800s and were almost certainly used for adult conversations. But the first professional telephone sex line didn’t come around until much later – the 1980s. Gloria Leonard started recording teasers for upcoming books in a sexy voice. That idea proved so successful that later she hired centerfolds to record dialogues that people could pay to hear. The government found out about all the fun that people were having and decided to put a stop to. They introduced the Telephone Decency Act in 1987, banning “obscene” conversations. Later, the bill was found to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Which is how 1-900 numbers continued to gain popularity and traction, and why they are still around today.

The very first iterations of telephone sex were clunky and unrealistic compared to the options around now. For instance, on many phone sex lines, you would call an operator and describe the kind of person you’d like to speak with. Then, a while later, someone would call you back, ostensibly fitting (or, at the very least, claiming to fit) the descriptions you requested. You would chat through a fantasy together, the call would end, and your credit card would be charged. However, the times have changed to make phone sex much more exciting and private than ever.

New Phone Sex Technology

Current phone technology has more in common with computers from the 1980s than it does with phones from decades ago. With a click of a button, you can be connected to someone who you find attractive, shares your sexual interests, and is available for a private chatting session. No more waiting for a call back that could come at a potentially terrible time. And no more wondering if the person on the end of the line matches the description they gave you.

Nearly every mobile phone these days has video, text, and picture exchanging technology, meaning that phone sex can be pretty intimate. People are no longer able to hide behind their voices, as phone sex operators may now be involved in trading pictures or videos. It’s more intimate than webcam services since the webcam performers are often entertaining many observers at once.

Plus, with the many ways we use phones to interface, people can choose the forum that they find most arousing. Contrary to popular belief, not everyone is turned on visually. Many people prefer sexting or a combination of sexually explicit words and pictures. Videos can stimulate multiple senses at once, and they may appeal to those who are both aurally and visually inclined. When people have video sex, they can see the other person enjoying their fantasy with them. An act far more intimate than the recorded sexy stories from the phone sex days of yore.

Why Phone Sex Has Stood the Test of Time

Telephone sex offers an element of privacy that is enticing to many people, some of whom come from marginalized communities. During the 1980s, phone sex was a way to explore gay fantasies without the risk of contracting HIV or outing yourself if you didn’t feel safe doing so. Even though our culture is becoming more accepting of all sexualities, sexual stigma is still pervasive. Many people don’t feel comfortable talking about their sexual fantasies, even if they have partners they trust and with whom they feel close to.

Phone sex helps people express themselves to a stranger, privately, without doing something that they might otherwise feel humiliated by. When phone sex is used to allow someone to unburden themselves of a lifelong secret, it’s more therapy than pornography. Phone sex operators offer a safe space for sexual self expression, providing a lifeline for many.

Pitfalls of Modern Phone Sex

Along with the advances that modern phones have conferred upon phone sex, some pitfalls exist as well. For instance, though free chat sites are widely available, some of them would be unsafe to use for sexual conversations. Occasionally people lurk on those websites to catfish people or to obtain their personal information for scam purposes. Additionally, it’s difficult to tell how old the person you’re texting is. If you’re interested in trying phone sex, make sure you find a website that verifies the chatter’s ages and protects your privacy so that your hot phone call doesn’t land you in hot water.

  1. This was so interesting, I hadn’t troubled to think how far phone sex had come and I was fascinated by the therapy aspect of it. Good safety tips too.
